New and Long-term Students

The purpose of the study was to measure the differences between new and long-term students. ANOVA tests reveal significant differences between new and long-term students, with long-term students exhibiting significantly more total and internal assets. Additionally, long-term youth reported higher levels of self-esteem and cultural competence. There were no significant differences in the total number of external assets exhibited, although long-term students exhibited higher level of family support and were more likely to view themselves as community resources. Although the predominant findings were positive, the survey did indicate several weaknesses. Less than a third of the youth exhibited the assets of Reading for Pleasure (28%), Community Values Youth (23%), Safety (31%), Positive Peer Influence (31%), and Peaceful Conflict Resolution (33 %).
