We reviewed a project that evaluated the health impacts of wildfires on vulnerable populations. The project aimed to assess the spatial distribution of health effects and to develop targeted interventions for those at risk of cardiovascular and respiratory issues, especially following severe wildfire seasons. This review provided high-level interdisciplinary guidance. This project’s scope is highly relevant to the current proposal, as both focus on spatial analysis and public health interventions in the context of wildfire impacts.
To support the project, we recommended integrating spatial analysis with community engagement. We guided the team in collecting a comprehensive dataset that included wildfire locations, air quality measurements, demographic data, and health service utilization records. Special consultations were held with local health departments, and permits were obtained for accessing sensitive public health records in compliance with privacy regulations. We helped the team generate visually engaging GIS maps that allowed stakeholders to interpret the data. The maps highlighted critical areas of concern and informed, actionable health interventions. The stakeholders valued the clear connections made between wildfire exposure and health outcomes.
The spatial analysis confirmed that communities closer to wildfires or with high smoke exposure experienced significant increases in health issues, particularly in areas with limited health services. Based on the findings, we helped the team develop a comprehensive health response plan that expanded health services, offered preventive care workshops, and launched public awareness campaigns. We helped the team create public-facing tools and communication strategies for this project. These digital products were critical in educating residents about wildfire risks and available health resources.
We delivered timely results that met all milestones, enabling health response strategies to be implemented before the next wildfire season. By providing guidance and technical support, we helped ensure that resources were directed to the most vulnerable areas, thus enhancing community resilience to wildfire-related health challenges. In addition, we provided all the necessary services to ensure that the health response strategies aligned with regulatory requirements.
